Mental Health Event 2021 and first LDM U18 Women's Game
Lockdown has had some level of impact on most, with the mental health implications being especially devastating for many. With support from Forum Central and Street Games, three of our players/young volunteers pitched for, developed and delivered a basketball event for 8-18 year olds, aimed to highlight the importance of youth mental health and celebrate an end to the stringent lockdown period.
The day was filled with fun games and plenty of prizes being won, whilst the organisers provided powerful talks on youth mental health and the importance of not suffering in silence. Nearly 50 young people took part in the event running from 10am - 2pm on a warm Bank Holiday Weekend.
It was an overall successful day, which ended with the u16 boys teams going to Leeds Beckett to take part in the Yorkshire CVL.
The Saturday saw Leeds LDM U18s women’s team set a landmark, playing their first ever fixture in a competitive game against Sheffield Hatters under the guidance of Coach Shaq. The players exceeded expectations, with strong performances across the board, providing plenty of problems to the experienced Sheffield Hatters players. A final score of 70-57 did not tell the full story, with the game running close up to the final buzzer. A proud moment for the organisation as we continue our commitment to providing more basketball opportunities for female players in the region.
